Working @ IBM Greenock with Manpower you'll get poorer and poorer. Greenock

Working at IBM

Hi I'm writing this document to report my experience at IBM Greenock as customer service rep.

About one year ago I was Unemployed In my home country and off course looking for a Job, My plan was to find a job next to home however I was also available to move.

Afters hundred of applications and interview one day a nice lady from Manpower called me and offered me to opportunity to have a job interview with Manpower to work for IBM Greenock, I've done the interview and got the job, I was off course very happy thinking about the future career opportunities I would have meet in this huge company.

The reality was different. I signed a contract for 18 months with the salary clearly written in the contract of 14500 pound a year and was not specified if I had to pay taxes on this, so I asked to my HR Manpower about taxes and she told me those money was the net value I was getting but as I came to work here I realised that this was not true and the real salary I got until now (finally my last month) was and is before taxes 1250.00 and after taxes so the real incoming 987.93 pound. With those money I had to pay: rent for the house in the sick Greenock: 300 pound, monthly bills 100 pound, food and house utilities about 200/250 pound, bus to reach the work place 60 pound/ month, the expensive and rotten food in the IBM canteen about 100 pound/month, the rest about 200 pound for some clothes or other reasons included free time life.

This is the minimum wage salary allowed in the UK and to live with it you have to be very clever as the life is very expensive. When you rent a house in Greenock you have to give a month deposit plus the current month rent and if you leave before the end of the contract (often not shorter than six months) you will loose the deposit, even if you finish the whole contract period and you give the required notice before to live the flat be sure to loose something from your deposit like cleaning staff or some small damaged that may be already there since you moved in but before to sign the contract you didn't check

I personally paid 50 pound for a damaged carpet and my flatmate paid 100 pound for the wall tincure (he left a few signs in the wall smaller than a penny coins).

The funny thing is that when I gave my notice to my HR she asked me the reason why I was leaving so I told her my frustrations she told me the salary was more that enough to live and eventually save something and that work here was grate deal, I told her almost all the companys offer a lunch paid for the employee and she laugh at me saing this is not real

However I did this because I was sure to have the chances in the future to be hired directly form IBM and build a good career but the true was different, I personally know peoples included my team leader who is here since 4 or 5 years and still be Manpower employee and get the same salary I get, I personally was lucky because I have been working in a team who support Cisco System and I have learned a lot of interesting thing, however after 10 month Cisco decided to move over Egypt and all my team had to find another position, we all were told that we should apply for the available positions around the centre and so I did ending in a switchboard team talking Italian all day long with upset and complaining customer about the disorganization of IBM and the poor service offered and lack of information about a lot of products and services.

I want to be fear and I want to talk also about the positive things about this experience: 1) I stayed here enough time to learn the customer service job (thanks to Cisco team) and this gave me the opportunities to apply for other similar jobs around the world and in a few weeks I'm moving to a better place in a trusted company and this time I spoke with an employee before to accept the job.
2) I have met a lot of friends from all over Europe and we keep in touch and I'm going to meet them as soon I'll have the time and this will give me the chance to travel more and cheaper (the same they will do).
I really do not find other positive things in this experience but if you are reading this document because you have been hired from Manpower or Adecco to work for IBM Greenock do not expect more than what you read above, I'm not telling you to do nod accept the job but I'm telling you that the true is what you are reading and not what Manpower tells you.
I have been reading the other documents in this web site related to IBM Greenock and I confirm that is everything true.

Kind Regards,

G.
