FALSLY ACCUSED OF RETURNING GOODS THAT HAD BEEN WASHED

My 10year old granddaughter was bought a dress by a friend, but it was too big The shop price label had been removed, but we had the receipt and original bag, When i tried to return the dress for a smaller size, I was accused that the dress had been worn and washed as the assistant said she smelt washing powder from it. I was really upset by this as the dress had not been worn and washed. What could I have done
