Before going to the interview with Vi marketing I dropped into an internet cafe and tried to do some research into the company I was going to see. Their name had yielded precious little in previous attempts, but this time I decided to search the address on google maps. 30 Western Road had R&S marketing registered to it, so I searched them on Google. Finding something entitled 'The consumer complaints: R&S marketing..." at the top of the google rankings I understood why they had changed their name. Reading the report really helped me deal with the strange situation I was about to find myself in.
Arriving at the office I walked upstairs to be handed a questionaire asking for all the details I had already given them on my CV (previous employment, address, pay, etc.), plus a signature (which I gave an unrecognisable version of). Sitting in the waiting room for 40 minutes with a bunch of other hopefuls, I asked for a pamphlet to tell me about the company - none was forth-coming, apparently because they had just moved to the building (this despite having year-old issues of Cosmo as reading material and lamps, 7 from the long-since-departed woolworths). There seemed to be a continual stream of interviews happening and not much else with regards to business.
The interviews are the business of the company. I don't really know how these make them money - whether it is ID theft, fraud or unpaid distribution of products, but whatever the scam is, the recession is high season for them.
The interview (eventually) took place in a threadbare room, with three chairs, a table and red carpet. The guy told me it was a highly in-demand business that they were running: it didn't look it. I heard a woman's scream from outside the door and the guy just kept on going through the commotion. Maybe some disgruntled employee had returned when he found out there was no pay, just a commision for sales. Whatever the case, the interview ended abruptly after the guy asked me what made me different from the rest of the people there:
"Curiosity" I said. He raised his eyebrows, like he'd never heard the word before and asked "what do you mean? "
"I research everything that I do thoroughly."
Don't give these people the time of day - it's not worth it.
