I bought a laptop from Comet in the Janaury sales at 0% for 6 months. I signed the credit agreement and was advised that interest would be charged and I would have to pay the minimum amount by monthly direct debit after 6 months. I received a statement in July advising me the date the Direct Debit (minimum amount) would be claimed and details of how I could pay more using my internet banking to reduce the balance faster. I set up a regular payment, which I would make on top of the monthly Direct Debit. When the Direct Debit was claimed, Santander took the full payment. After a lengthy conversation with the most unhelpfull and rude idiot in the Santander (bad) customer service centre, the best they could offer me was to send me a cheque within 28 days, to repay the amount they had taken by misake. I argued this was unacceptable and was not inline with Direct Debit guarantee scheme (I'm a Bank manager) and that I was entitled to a full refund. Eventually I had to make a complaint and I was advised that I would receive a call within 5 working days. I am still waiting. I will never Bank with or use Santander finance ever again. They have the most abysmal customer service as well as being extremely unhelpfull and impossible to deal with. Avoid this organisation at all costs!
