I received a letter dated 12/9/08 with no return address or Country listed. Only said Chatham Essex and "International Claim Department" stating I had won $150, 000 and included a check for $6, 875.00, supposedly to cover a government tax for $2, 987.00.
The letter was signed by a Sandra Hunt, Promotion Manager. The check said it is drawn from a JP Morgan Chase Bank in Columbus, Ohio. I was told to call the phone number, 011-44-750-501-8448 and speak to David Norman. I called the number.
I asked how I won this and asked if it was a scam. I was assured it was not. I was asked if I ever shopped at Walmart and I said yes. He said my name was randomly drawn because I had shopped there.
He said to deposit the check and call him the next day and I would receive instructions from a tax agent who would be assigned to me. I went online and saw this had happened to others. Beware. This is a scam. How disheartening that someone would do this to others.
I called JP Morgan Chase Bank and advised them of this also. Take care all and don't let these creeps take advantage of you. The check they sent you will bounce.
