Bupa International left one of their Irish citizens in an African hospital denying him his international coverage after he and his wife were attacked by a gang attempting a carjacking.
The patient saved his wife by fighting off 5 attackers armed with a gun and axes and was taken in critical condition to Nairobi Hospital in Kenya his face and head practically hacked to pieces.
Their British insurance carrier was immediately notified and they were told they would call them back.
They then called back and denied them coverage due to the couple being Kenyan residents. When they insisted they were not Kenyan residents at all only tourists and proved that they were in fact American and British residents Bupa then cut off all communication with them and instead outsourced intermediaries to call them
daily insisting on massive amounts of data such as tickets and baggage claims from over a year ago, proof of all places of travel and hotel bills in the last year, employers (past and present) in the last year, detailed itinerary for their movements every day for the last year, mortgage payment reciepts, medical history for last 8 years, on and on.
This has been preventing them from being evacuated out of Kenya and back to their home for over 10 days now and is still ongoing.
This couple has been so bombarded with demands of huge amounts of unnecessary details and data that the wife (a California resident) told me, "Dealing with British Bupa insurance people has been more stressful and terrifying than facing down the barrel of a gun and watching my husband get axed practically to death. Bupa treats us like criminals."
Each time the wife provides the baggage claim tickets, or their home mortgage payment stub, or their health records for the last 8 years, etc. Bupa asks for they ask for something even more ridiculous and time consuming, drawing the process out indefinitely.
They insist on recieving the same information over and over and over, the wife running all over Nairobi
in search of faxes and scanners, which are few and far between in Kenya. She spends so much time searching and sending and resending information that she cannot see her husband in hospital.
Their doctor says he has more horror stories regarding Bupa than any other health carrier in the business. He stated he would rather not have insurance than be covered by Bupa.
Bupa is a scam, plain and simple. Get a broken leg and your probably fine, get your face hacked to pieces and you are looking at bankruptcy.
