I purchased 12 garden lights from All Square in London, UK in Sept. 2004. I told the salesperson, Michael I believe, that these lights were for my back garden and needed to be waterproof. I was assured the ones I were sold were 'fully waterproof' and 'would last for years'. When I pointed out that the lights came with no instructions/warranty, I was told that my electrician would know how to install the lights and that I would have no problems. I was sold 12 Hooded Spike Spots at 25 pds apiece (with a 20% discount as my electrician worked with All Square at that time). 8 were installed in summer of 2005. Within 3 months, half of the lights stopped working, and within 8 months, they all quit.
I spoke to the store in but as I got married that year, decided to wait until the electrician came by that installed the lights to see if it was a wiring or lighting problem. As I used the lights only once or twice a month, I did not have an electrician come by until this year. I was told that the lights had water damage and were corroded.
I called the store on June 19th and spoke to a salesperson, Natalie. She was very sympathetic about my problem, and offered a deep discount on other lights to make up the loss, and asked me to bring in the 4 unused lights for a refund.
When I went to the store on June 29 to ask for a store credit or discount to make up the loss of 282 pds to purchase new lights, I was refused by the owner Tony. I also took in the 4 unused lights, in their original boxes, with the original receipts, to return, but the owner, Tony, refused this also.
Tony agreed that the bulb I brought in from one of the lights did show water corrosion, which would indicate light leakage. He also pointed out that the lights could suffer water damage if they 'pointed up or at an upwards angle', but this was not pointed out to me during the sales time. Again, I was told that I was being sold fully waterproof lights, not lights that were waterproof only under certain conditions.
I requested a discount or store credit from the owner, Tony, who refused. He said the lighting supplier had gone into liquidation (due to bad product I assume), and that he no longer stocked this light. I would therefore like to have a refund in full of the 282 British Pounds Sterling that I paid.
I registered a complaint with the Better Business Bureau UK on June 29th.
