Spurious payment demands

This American company with a UK mailbox, continues to demand monies for rental of equipment. The rental agreement was terminated in January but I continue to receive unsolicited demands, and they will not acknowledge my letters nor enter into any communication. Now they are sending the bailiffs around. Any suggestions other than a county court hearing? Loathe to spend money on a solicitors letter as I know I will never get any recompense.
