Asking for money in order to claim a lottery prize

I am not sure if this is illegal or not but i know it is a scam. This company or person sent me a letter with a prize claim form and stated that "I am the Definitive Confirmed Winner" of a check in the amount of $47, 500.00 and all i have to do is send them $50 in order to claim the prize. And to make the check out to Intermail System Services. I did not send any money but i am sure if i did i would not of heard from them again. Do not be swindled by conterfiet lottery winnings.
