Charges against unsuccessful download

Electronics and household app.
I have tried to download a ringtone track from my favourite film. I kept getting messages to text ok to a number (first 88838 then 81194) and each time a response came I got charged about £3 and I was told I became a memeber of this or that club at £4.50 or £9 a week. I have altogether lost about £12 and still didn't receive the one ringtone I asked for as my mobile is apparently incompatible?? Why isn't there a warning to check first whether you can download something before you start getting charged?? I have naturally immediately cancelled my 'memberships' as i didn't want ot lose any more money. The whole system is a rip off!!!
